Internship at Doggy's Island, a resort for dogs in Chiba, Japan
In summer 2026, I completed an internship at Doggy’s Island in Chiba, Japan. Having always been on the receiving end of hospitality as a guest at hotels around the world, stepping into a staff uniform for the first time was both daunting and eye-opening. I went into the experience expecting it to be challenging, but I emerged with a newfound appreciation for the industry and a much more optimistic perspective on what it takes to deliver exceptional service.
Lounge & Cafe Operations
In the lounge and cafe, I jumped directly into front-of-house service during the summer rush. I was taught the proper way to greet arrivals, serve drinks, and keep tables clear and prepped for new guests. Rather than waiting to be prompted, I needed to anticipate what customers needed before they asked. Working through peak hours required constant communication with senior staff to keep the service flow smooth, while learning small details, like proper technique for wiping surfaces, showed me how much precision goes into maintaining standards.
Front Desk & Guest Services
At the front desk, I supported reception staff with guest check-ins and general inquiries. This role felt the most like stepping into a traditional hotel environment. Following structured check-in scripts and standardized protocols gave me the clarity and confidence I needed to interact professionally with clients. I also learned how to handle varied situations on the spot, adapting the check-in process to match each guest's individual profile and preferences.
Canine Care & Resort Experience
Working directly with the animals in the dog care department felt very natural to me, given that I am a dog owner and have past experience volunteering at an animal shelter. Unlike the front-of-house areas with unpredictable rushes, dog care maintained a steady, comforting rhythm. Beyond monitoring play areas and interacting with visiting pets, I learned about the behind-the-scenes care provided to animals with specific health needs. Observing small details, from running outdoor sprinklers on hot days to equipping guest rooms with specialized dog beds and bowls, showed me how deeply the resort prioritizes its four-legged guests.
Reflections & Takeaways
This internship taught me that effective hospitality lies in the small details guests rarely consciously notice, from wiping down tables with proper techniques to anticipating a pet owner's needs before they ask. Realizing that wearing the resort uniform meant my actions directly reflected the company's reputation helped me push past my hesitation. This experience showed me that with proper training and clear communication, working in hospitality can be genuinely fulfilling. The lessons in confidence, composure, and attention to detail will stay with me throughout my academic journey and future career pursuits.
